AMSPDC’s Frontiers in Science (FIS) Program
About the Program
Established in 1987, the Frontiers in Science (FIS) program was created to expand engagement among pediatric residents interested in academic careers. Now in its 39th year, the program continues to inspire and support the next generation of pediatric physician-scientists.
The program is designed to:
- Expose residents to exceptional scientists and investigators
- Foster interest in research and investigative careers
- Provide opportunities to connect with peers, PSDP fellows, and pediatric department chairs
Over the past four decades:
- All medical schools in the U.S., Canada, and Puerto Rico have had the opportunity to participate
- More than 1,000 residents have participated in the program
The FIS program also highlights the Pediatric Scientist Development Program (PSDP), which provides advanced research training and career development for pediatricians pursuing academic medicine. During the symposium, PSDP fellows present their work, offering insight into what can be accomplished through 2–3 years of focused research training.
About the FIS Symposium
The Frontiers in Science (FIS) Symposium offers pediatric residents an unparalleled opportunity to explore careers in academic pediatrics and research while connecting with leaders in the field.
Participants will:
- Engage in dynamic programming featuring distinguished physician-scientists and pediatric leaders discussing timely topics in science, research, and academic medicine
- Connect with leaders in the field, including physician-scientists and PSDP fellows
- Learn about the PSDP and pathways to successful careers in research and academic medicine
- Expand their professional network by interacting with peers and pediatric department chairs from across the U.S. and Canada
What Participants Are Saying
- “Meeting other residents interested in integrating research into their careers was a highlight of my experience.”
- “An excellent opportunity to learn about the PSDP program and meet participants in various stages of training.”
