Medicaid Education Series: Medicaid Cuts in the House Republican Budget Reconciliation Bill
May 21, 2025
In the second session of AMSPDC PWI’s Medicaid Education Series, Edwin Park—Medicaid policy expert from Georgetown University’s Center for Children and Families—delivers a timely and insightful analysis of federal budget reconciliation efforts and proposals that pose serious threats to the Medicaid program. Park breaks down what’s at stake, including proposed restrictions on provider taxes—critical to state Medicaid financing—and the addition of administrative hurdles, such as mandatory work requirements, that could significantly reduce enrollment. This session offers a clear, comprehensive synthesis of the Medicaid-related provisions in the current House bill.

Medicaid Education Series: Medicaid 101 – What Pediatric Department Leaders Need to Know
May 9, 2025
In this foundational session, Medicaid experts Joan Alker and Dr. Jim Perrin provide a practical overview of how Medicaid works—and why it is critical to pediatric departments and hospital systems. They explore Medicaid’s essential role in covering nearly half of U.S. children, its joint federal-state structure, and key benefits like EPSDT. The session also outlines the basics of Medicaid financing, including the federal match system and supplemental payments that significantly influence hospital budgets.

The speakers briefly touch on current policy threats—such as funding cuts and work requirements—with more to come in the May 21, 2025 session, “Federal Threats to Medicaid” with Edwin Park. Both Alker and Perrin emphasize the importance of pediatric leaders understanding how Medicaid dollars flow within their institutions and call for more informed, active engagement from pediatric departments to help shape Medicaid policy and protect child health.

Hear an update to the pediatric academic community on the progress of the Pediatrics 2025: AMSPDC Workforce Initiative. The Initiative was created in 2020 and currently has 19 collaborating organizations.  Our goal is to increase the number and diversity of high-quality students who enter training in categorical Pediatrics, Medicine-Pediatric, and Combined Pediatric Subspecialty training programs, as well as improve the supply and distribution of pediatric subspecialists with the ultimate goal of meeting the health and wellness needs of the wide diversity of US children, adolescents, and young adults.

The webinar included an overview of all the work being done in what we are calling Domains, as well as updates on the NASEM Consensus Study on the Pediatric Subspecialty Workforce and Its Impact on Child Health and Well-Being.
